Page Rank: Is It That Important?

By Joshua Elliot On September 10, 2009 Under Web Page

google-pagerankWhen you click into a new website and you see that the website has a bar that reads 7. Do you know what that is? That is called the Google PageRank Toolbar. A lot of people have been talking about Page Rank for the web page for quite some time now, so I want to voice out what I know on regarding the topic. But before we start, let us understand more by first learn their:

History of Page Rank

Page Rank was first discovered by Larry Page (founder of Google) and Sergey Brin, as part of a new search engine for online users. This later led to the founding of Google. Page Rank continues to be the foundation of Google’s web search tools. And it has never left Google since.

Google’s Description on Page Rank

Page Rank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”.

How is Page Rank Calculated?

Page Rank is calculated by using inbound links from a web page to another web page. Example: There are 5 web pages from different websites. If web page A, B and C linked to web page D, and assuming that each page has a value of 0.2, thus the formula will look like this:

PR(D)= PR(A) + PR(B) + PR(C), which is equal to 0.6 for web page E.

This is the simplest form to calculate the page rank of a web page.

BUT, Page Rank is calculated using a voting system to give points to the other web page, and we all know that a web page will have at least two or more links pointing to more than one web page too. So how is Page Rank calculated in this way? Assuming that web page A have two links, web page B have 3 links, and web page C have 4 links, all three points to web page D, and each page has value of 0.2, here is the calculation:

PR(D) = PR (A)/2 + PR(B)/3 + PR(C)/4, the page rank value of D now is 0.166.

You can see that in order to calculate the actual value of your web page is hard work, and Google has done a great job in making it easy for us, by looking at the Google Page Rank tool bar.

Not Every Web Page Has the Same Page Rank in Your Website

For the above reason, that is why not every web page has the same Page Rank, because you can’t control people from linking to you, and you can’t control where the others are linking from. So that is why you should focus on strengthening some of the web page that has the most relevant content or sales page that helps to convert your products or services.

Is Page Rank That Important?

Yes, it is important. It is a social proof that Google take serious consideration so that is why they give your website or blog the ranking you deserve.

No, because you do not know where your link will come from, and they can come from some website that is totally different from yours. And furthermore the keyword that you are targeting may not be converting even if you rank well.

Whatever you do, do not focus too much with getting good Page Rank, and not providing good content or linkage from other websites. Just concentrate on providing content for your readers with keyword focus theme and the Page Rank will come.

Another thing to note is that you do not have to do the Page Rank calculation yourself, because it will not come to conclusion of your Page Rank value, let Google their job and you yours.

If you want to install Google Page Rank Tool, click here to download, it’s free. Or you can always use the Page Rank checker to find out your website Page Rank.

How do you Get a Good Page Rank?

First you will need to be very focus on your niche and only talk about topics related to your niche. So your keyword research must be done correctly, using a good keyword research tool is an essential to your Internet marketing success. Second is to get link from other website that has good Page Rank, in this way you will be able to get a Page Rank fast using others Page Rank. Third is to increase your page views in your web page, you can inter link your web pages, so that it will increase your page views or use other traffic generation methods to get more viewers to your website.

Unfortunately there is really nothing you can do specifically to increase your pagerank. So, just do the best you can to promote each page in the most seo way possible.

    Hi Carl,

Thanks for the input. The best way is to do it naturally.

“Page Rank: Is It That Important?”

    In a word. No.

In a longer word – I’ve had successful websites that have made me decent income that are PR0. Pagerank is a small part of a big puzzle of web success (and success isn’t just financial success).

But yes, if you’re successful on the internet, and run a decent website, the rest will follow :)
